Supervision

Supervision

Are you a coaching psychologist or occupational psychologist who would like to develop your professional practice? Would you like to engage in supervision with an experienced Occupational and Coaching Psychologist?

What is supervision

Supervision is a process that aims to enhance the professional development of the supervisee, ensure the quality of service provided to clients, and protect the client’s well-being

The primary purpose of supervision is to protect the best interests of the client by facilitating the supervisee’s professional development and monitoring the quality of service delivered. It also provides a fresh perspective, attends to the quality of the work, ensures safe practice, and requires individuals to develop high levels of self-awareness.

Coaching supervision

Are you a coaching psychologist looking to enhance your practice, deepen your self-awareness, and ensure ethical and effective client work?

“Coaching supervision is a collaborative process facilitating coaches (and coach supervisors) to grow their reflective practice with a view to continuous improvement and professional development, client safety and the strengthening of professional identity. The process considers the entire system surrounding the supervisee and their client work and seeks to bring value to all those stakeholders connected to that work”
Clutterbuck, Whitaker & Lucas (2016)

I am a qualified and experienced coaching psychologist with a strong track record of providing supervision to other psychologists and coaches. I am a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Division of Coaching Psychology. I am also an accredited supervisor with the BPS.

Occupational Psychologist supervision

Supervision for Occupational Psychologists isn’t currently mandatory from the BPS. HCPC do support that registered psychologists should be participating in supervision as part of their practice where it is possible. I that registered and/or chartered psychologists can benefit from creating space for their reflective work as part of their professional practice. The BPS published a paper ‘Supervision guidance for psychologists’ and suggested the following;

“Supervision is strongly recommended for all Practitioner Psychologists to promote safe practice. Supervision/consultation is an essential part of good practice as a Psychologist and provides the vital underpinning of good quality psychological work. There is no legal requirement for supervision, although it is considered an ethical and professional expectation to engage in supervision to support effective practice (BPS, 2017). “

In this paper BPS shared that the objectives of supervision were

  • Provide practitioners with consultation on their work with service users or clients;
  • Enhance the quality and competence of practice offered to all recipients;
  • Offer Psychologists intellectual challenges enabling reflection, transformational learning and psychological support to maximise their responsibility for appropriate self-care;
  • Contribute to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of both Psychologist and supervisor by developing competence in the use and practise of supervision.

Supervision for Occupational psychologists is to create a safe space to review practice in the 5 areas of Occupational Psychology, develop reflexive practice, review the consultancy cylve, ethical decision making and evidence based practice.

It has been suggested that what supervision means for occupational psychologists is a emergent model of supervision in action as a ‘community of practice’ (Lane, Watts, & Corrie, 2016). Research by (Annan & Ryba, 2013), and suggest that Occupational Psychologists think about different activities of supervision which are.

  1. Activities situated in the work of professional teams.
  2. Informal supervision conversations
  3. Formal supervision
  4. Conferences and workshops
  5. Access to professional literature through libraries and the internet

Supervision can be a effective and responsible of your practice, and I feel that as Occupational Psychologists we have responsibility for professional practice and ‘good work’ is to engage in our own development and reflective opportunities. Supervision can help guide and support your development and responsibility as a Occupational Psychologist practitioner.

Coaching and Mentoring

For some psychologists, supervision may not be the right choice. If you are looking for support to develop your business as a practitioner, or you are looking for support for your journey to accreditation then a coaching or mentoring relationship may be more suitable.

Possible accreditation routes that you may need support in are

HCPC accreditation for practitioner psychologist
BPS Coaching Psychologist Chartership Route
EMCC accreditation
Decision or support on academic choices for your practice

If you are looking to develop your professional accreditations, and need mentor/coaching support for your progress, then I can help support from my own experience. Any support is never a guarantee of being awarded accreditation but I recognise a helpful guide can reduce stress and time involved in the process.

About Dr Clare Mulligan-Foster

Dr Clare Mulligan-Foster (CPsychol) is a Registered Occupational Psychologist, Chartered Coaching Psychologist, and an experienced supervisor.

My core value is kindness. I believe kindness to others is what brings joy and gratitude to our day. I also believe that kindness allows space for growth, as we can see our mistakes and accept them without trauma or regret and use it as a space to identify areas for development. I feel I bring a non-judgmental space for conversation, and growth.

I have a high value for doing ‘good work’ and this is demonstrated through my coaching and supervision practice and also my work supporting Practitioners in Training on the Professional Doctorate and as a coaching assessor with BPS.  ‘Good work’ to me is about professional practice and I believe as psychologists we should be aware of how we can reflect on the standards of proficiency and ethical guidance for our work. I can bring guidance and direction to other coaches and psychologists on how they develop their ethical and professional practice.

My core reasons for supervision is to develop reflective and reflexive thinking and help develop maturity in coaching and psychologist practitioner practice.

I have worked hard to develop my own professional work as a chartered and registered psychologist and the following is an overview of my qualifications to support my work as a supervisor.

  • I am a Registered Occupational Psychologist with HCPC
  • I am a Chartered Coaching Psychologist with BPS.
  • I hold a Professional Certificate of Advance Study in Coaching Supervision with Oxford Brookes University
  • I am on the Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors (RAPPS) with BPS
  • I completed my supervision skills training with BPS
  • I hold Individual Accreditation (EIA) and professional designation at practitioner level with EMCC
  • I am an assessor for the accelerated route for Coaching Psychology with BPS.
  • I am co-programme director on part 1 of the Professional Doctorate in Occupational Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London
